The Boldness Of Faith
THE BOLDNESS OF FAITH
Nehemiah 2:1-10
As you read the accounts of Ezra and Nehemiah, you will notice one striking difference between their respective journeys from Persia to Jerusalem. Ezra was “ashamed” to request an armed escort for those he led to Judea, fully trusting in God’s faithful provision for safe passage (Ezra 8:21-23). Nehemiah, however, received the armed escort provided by the king (Nehemiah 2:9). We need to realize that both men fully trusted God, but their trust is expressed in different ways. Ezra was on a spiritual mission, carrying the Law of God back to Jerusalem along with a group of priests, Levites, and temple servants. Nehemiah was a governor on official business carrying the king’s decree granting him permission to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. His military escort was necessary to credential his office and authority from the king.
Today, there are those who choose the path of Ezra, trusting God alone for protection from the ever-present threats around us. Those who choose such a path should not judge those who go the way of Nehemiah with armed protection, and neither should they judge those who choose Ezra’s way. In matters where Scripture does not direct a path, we must each follow our own convictions according to God’s leading and grace. But whatever you do, let it be done in faith, for “whatever is not from faith is sin” (Romans 14:23). Are you walking in the boldness of faith in Christ?
